Questions and Answers |
| 1. | Q. | Can we walk on the roof without damaging it? |
| | A. | Absolutely!
Unlike other aluminum and copper roofing products, the Perma-Lock shingle
can be walked on without any damage to the roofing system at all. The Perma-Lock
system is fully supported by the roof’s sheeting, which prevents any
damage from foot traffic. |

| 2. | Q. | When it rains or hails, will the sound be
loud? |
| | A. | No, not inside your home. Typically,
our low profile Perma-Lock Shingles lie directly and snugly over tarpaper
which is applied over the plywood sheeting. Inside the comfort of your home
you will hear virtually no noise during a rain or hail storm. |

| 3. | Q. | Is the Perma-Lock Roofing system fireproof? |
| | A. | Unlike many other roofing materials,
Perma-Lock roofing systems are fire-resistant. Even blown-on embers won’t
cause combustion. The Perma-Lock shingle meets Underwriters Laboratory’s
UL 790 Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Roof Coverings. Class A fire
ratings are available when the Perma-Lock Shingles are installed with the
specified under-layment. |

| 4. | Q. | Should I be concerned about hail? |
| | A. | No!! The Perma-Lock
Shingles are low profile shingles and are great at taking whatever Mother
Nature dishes out – including hailstones. The Perma-Lock Shingles
meet Underwriters Laboratory’s UL 2218 Impact Resistance Testing at
Class IV, the most severe test. This test includes taking a 2” steel
ball and dropping it onto the roofing system from 20’ up in the air.
What’s more, our Perma-Lock shingles are warranted not to leak due
to perforation of the shingles due to hail. In fact, you may even get a
discount on your homeowners insurance! It sure wouldn’t hurt to ask
your insurance agent. |

| 5. | Q. | What will happen to a Perma-Lock Roofing System
in a lightning storm? |
| | A. | Despite what most people think, an aluminum
roof does NOT attract lightning. You don’t have to worry about your
home, even in the fiercest electrical storm. |
| | | |
| 6. | Q. | What happens when a shingle/shingles are punctured
or damaged in any way? |
| | A. | Perma-Lock shingles, unlike panel systems
and other types of metal roofs, are easily replaced without compromising
the integrity of the roof. Panel systems, for example, require that the
whole panel be replaced. |
| | | |
| 7. | Q. | How much longer will a Perma-Lock Roofing
System last over common roofing like asphalt or wood shingles? |
| | A. | You can expect the Perma-Lock roofing
systems to outlast other options. Th Aluminum and Cooper Perma-Lock roofing
system will not break down repeated wet/dry, freeze/thaw cycles like other
roofing products. That’s why so many old historic buildings are roofed
with aluminum or copper systems.
The average life span of an asphalt roof is roughly 12 to 20 years. The
lifespan can be influenced by the pitch of your roof and the weather/climate
in your area. Asphalt begins to deteriorate as soon as it is exposed to
normal weather. A Perma-Lock Aluminum or Copper roof, however, will never
decompose.
Wood shingle, shake and tile roofing systems have varying degrees of weather-related
problems that lead to breakdown overtime. Wood shingle and shake roofs often
need replacement before twenty years. Concrete tile roofs can crack and
warp in the freeze/thaw cycle of more northern climates.
Our Perma-Lock Roofing Systems will outlast the roofing systems mentioned
above. In addition to outlasting the competition, our roofing systems retain
their good looks and durability over very long periods of time. |

| 8. | Q. | What about the environment? Is an Aluminum
or Copper Perma-Lock roofing system environmentally responsible? |
| | A. | Absolutely. Our Perma-Lock roofing systems
are great for the environment as well as being great for your home. Much
of the raw material we use is post-consumer recycled material. We are very
proud that fact. In addition, our Perma-Lock Aluminum and Copper roofing
systems are completely recyclable. According to the National Association
of Homebuilders Research Center, 20 billion pounds of asphalt shingles are
dumped into U.S. landfills every year. That’s a lot of asphalt shingles.
Because our Perma-Lock roofing systems can often be installed over your
current roof, without tearing off what's already there, this helps to reduce
this excessive shingle waste. |

| 9. | Q. | I have seen aluminum roofs with different
colors that have faded at different rates. Can I expect a consistent color
on my roof over time? |
| | A. | Yes, you can expect a consistent color
on your Perma-Lock roof over time. In years past, the coating technology
for aluminum wasn’t anywhere near where it is today. The coating technology
that we use on the Aluminum Perma-Lock shingles is the best available in
the industry. The manufacturer of the coating system we use provides an
excellent warranty against colors fading on the shingles over time. We are
happy to pass that warranty along to you. In our Aluminum Perma-Lock line,
it is essential that all the material for any given roofing job come from
the same die lot. . We insure that all Aluminum Perma-Lock shingles shipped
to a job come from the same die lot and will therefore maintain consistency
in their appearance over the years Our Copper Perma-Lock line is made of
copper and as you know, copper ages in its look over time as it is exposed
to weather. |

| 10 | Q. | How does a metal roof compare in cost with
other roofing materials? |
| | A. | If a homeowner really studies the options,
the Perma-Lock Roofing System is the most economical choice over time. There
is a principle that holds true when it comes to selecting a roof –
that is – you get what you pay for. The exact price of any roofing
project is determined not only by the materials being used, but also by
the roof's complexity and whether installation can be achieved without removing
and disposing of the old roof. Perma-Lock Aluminum and Copper roofing systems
can often be installed over old roofs, allowing property owners to focus
their resources into a superior roof rather than spend money to tear off
and dispose of old roofing materials.
We, here at The Aluminum Shingle Company, consider our Perma-Lock roofing
systems to be "investment-grade roofing." Homeowners can opt for
less expensive roofs and then have to maintain and replace those roofs on
a regular basis. However, for homeowners who want a beautiful and worry-free
roof which will maintain its good looks for the long term, the Perma-Lock
roofing systems fit the bill. Yes, there are "exotic" roofs such
as slate and glazed tile which are more costly than our products but, because
those products last no longer than our metal roofs, they ultimately end
up with a higher "cost per year."
The careful engineering which has gone into our Perma-Lock roofing systems
will result in energy savings and increased home value as well as unmatched
protection and durability.
